The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed on Monday that the southwest monsoon is poised to enter West Bengal’s sub-Himalayan districts, including Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Jalpaiguri, within the next three to four days. This forecast delays the typical monsoon onset date of June 6 in these regions. The conditions are favorable for the monsoon’s advancement, especially as northern districts are already witnessing pre-monsoon rainfall.
The IMD bulletin highlighted the anticipation of heavy downpours over the coming days, particularly impacting the sub-Himalayan districts. Rainfall is expected to be vigorous, as the weather has remained humid in southern Bengal, where sporadic rains have occurred in some areas.
Significantly, the IMD pointed out that Alipurduar received the highest recorded rainfall in West Bengal in the last 24 hours, measuring a substantial 133 mm. Other districts also reported varying levels of rainfall, with Jalpaiguri receiving 53 mm, Cooch Behar 18 mm, and Darjeeling and Kalimpong recording 7.8 mm and 19 mm respectively. Heavier rainfall is forecast over the next couple of days across the northern districts, namely Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar.
