Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti raised critical issues regarding the youth in Kashmir in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent video advocating for forgiveness towards students who protested against him. Mufti highlighted a stark divide in opportunities for India’s Generation Z, stating that while some youth inherit privileges, others in Kashmir face systemic adversity.
In her statement on X, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti articulated that Kashmiri youth experience “inherited curfews and trauma.” She pointed out the plight of young people in Kashmir, underlining their struggle against “curfews, crackdowns, internet shutdowns, lost classrooms, unemployment and trauma.”
Mufti’s comments come after PM Modi called for understanding and forgiveness towards students who expressed their discontent using profanities during protests at Jantar Mantar. The PDP chief responded by asserting that such gestures of sympathy do not address the deeper issues faced by the youth in Kashmir.
“Hon’ble PM @narendramodi, there are two Gen Zs in India. One inherited opportunity; the other, in Kashmir, inherited curfews,” she stated. Her statement emphasized a pressing need for dignity and equal opportunities rather than just apologies or sympathy from the government.
Mufti further expressed that what the Kashmiri youth truly seek is political space and the freedom to aspire without fear. “If compassion is to define India’s future, let it begin with Kashmir,” she urged, appealing for a transformative approach towards governance that recognizes the unique challenges faced by young people in the region.
