Hyderabad Cybercrime Police Arrest Software Employee for Defamation

Hyderabad Cybercrime Police arrested a 30-year-old software employee for allegedly creating a fake Instagram account and posting offensive comments targeting a woman. This incident has raised concerns over online harassment and cyberbullying.

The arrest took place after police received a complaint from the victim, a politically exposed person based in Hyderabad. Deputy Commissioner of Police, Cyber Crimes, V Aravind Babu, confirmed that the accused, a resident of Kachiguda, launched the fake profile to undermine the woman’s reputation.

In October 2025, the accused allegedly used the account to post abusive, defamatory, and sexually explicit comments on a video featuring the victim. The video, originally shared by the “Pura Local” Instagram channel, gained traction on social media before it became the subject of this unlawful harassment.

Police registered the case under multiple provisions, including Sections 66(D) and 67 of the Information Technology Act, alongside Sections 79 and 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). These legal frameworks aim to combat cybercrime and protect victims from online harassment.

The accused manipulated the fake account to conceal his identity while disseminating harmful content directed at the complainant. In the operation, police seized one mobile phone from the suspect’s possession, which they believe contains further evidence of his misdeeds.

Authorities urge social media users to take screenshots of abusive profiles and save timestamps before blocking or reporting such accounts. This evidence proves crucial for any potential investigation, increasing the chances of accountability against malicious actors.

The cybercrime unit also emphasizes the importance of verifying unknown social media accounts. Users should refrain from sharing or commenting on unverified or inflammatory content that could lead to further harassment or reputational damage.
